How long does self tanner last? Five to seven days, ten if you top up
The honest number rather than the marketing one, what actually decides where you land in that range, and the one habit that gets you to the top of it.

A Tallowtan tan lasts five to seven days from one application. Moisturise daily and you will be at the longer end. Add a light refresh coat around day four or five and you can hold it for about ten. DHA-only formulas usually manage three to five.
I could say ten days and leave it there, and plenty of brands do. You would apply it once, watch it go at day six, and never buy from me again. So here is the actual breakdown.
Why it fades at all
A self tan is not a dye and it does not soak in. DHA reacts with amino acids in the dead cells on the very surface of your skin and turns them brown.1
Those cells were always going to fall off. Your skin sheds its surface layer continuously, and the tan goes with it. That is the whole reason a self tan fades, and it is why nothing you do makes it permanent.
It also explains the two things people find confusing. Shedding happens at different rates on different parts of the body, so the tan fades unevenly. And dry skin sheds faster, so dry skin loses a tan sooner.
You are not losing your tan. You are losing the skin cells it was sitting on.
Vanessa Corey, Founder & FormulatorWhat decides your number
| Variable | How much it moves the number |
|---|---|
| The formula | DHA alone produces one layer of colour that goes as cells shed. A second, slower active means two colours wearing off at different rates, so the fade thins rather than patches |
| How hydrated your skin is | The biggest factor, and it works at both ends. Hydration affects how well colour develops in the first place,2 and dry skin sheds faster afterwards |
| Where on your body | Thicker skin holds more colour and behaves differently.1 Hands, feet, elbows and knees are the usual trouble |
| What you do afterwards | Long hot baths, chlorinated pools, scrubs and exfoliating acids all speed up shedding. Short showers and daily moisturiser slow it |
How to get to ten days
- Moisturise the day before, not just the hour before. Your skin should already be in good condition when you apply.1 This is the step most people skip and it matters more than any of the others.
- Exfoliate gently 24 hours ahead. Not the same day, which leaves skin raw. The day before gives DHA an even surface to work on.1
- Moisturise every day afterwards. Slower shedding means slower fading. Concentrate on knees, elbows and ankles, where patchiness starts.
- Add a light refresh coat at day four or five. This is the whole trick. A thin maintenance layer over a tan that is still there, rather than a full application over a faded one. Less product, no buildup, no patchiness.
- Skip acids and retinol while the tan is on. AHAs, BHAs and retinol all speed up cell turnover, which is exactly what you are trying to slow down.
- Short showers, cool water, pat dry. Soaking is the enemy, and rubbing with a towel takes colour with it.
The longer version of the routine is in how to make self tanner last longer, and if yours is going patchy rather than simply fading, that is a different problem — see why your self tan fades fast.

It does not fade at the same speed everywhere
| Area | Typical | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Body and limbs | 5–7 days | The number most people mean |
| Face | 4–5 days | Faster turnover, and daily cleansing |
| Hands | 3–4 days | Washed several times a day |
| Knees and elbows | Fade first | Thick skin, constant friction |
| Ankles and feet | Fade patchy | Unless you prep them well |
This is normal, and it is not the product failing. It is how quickly different areas of skin renew themselves.
Questions about tan longevity
How long does a Tallowtan tan last?
Five to seven days from one application. Moisturising daily keeps you at the longer end. A light refresh coat around day four or five extends it to about ten.
How do I actually get ten days?
By topping up, not by applying more at the start. Put a thin refresh coat over the tan at day four or five while colour is still there. Less product, no buildup, and the fade stays even.
Why does my self tanner fade so fast?
Usually dry skin. Hydration affects both how well colour develops and how quickly skin sheds it. After that: skipping the day-before moisturiser, long hot showers, swimming, scrubs, and using acids or retinol while the tan is on.
Does it fade evenly?
More evenly with two actives than one. DHA and erythrulose wear off at different rates, so colour thins out rather than patching. Daily moisturising matters just as much as the formula.
Can I reapply before it has fully faded?
Yes, and you should. A light coat every few days over existing colour beats waiting for a full fade and starting again.
How long before I shower after applying?
At least six to eight hours, ideally overnight. Then rinse with cool water and no soap on the first rinse.
Why does my face lose it before my body?
Facial skin renews faster than body skin, and you wash your face daily. Four to five days on the face is normal even when your body still looks good.
