Does self tanner dry out skin? Yes — unless it's built like this

Most self tanners dry your skin every time you use them. Here is the real reason — and what to look for instead.

The short answer

Yes. Most self tanners do dry out your skin. But it is not the tan doing it. It is the alcohol in the base. Tallowtan uses no alcohol, a grass-fed tallow base, and is pH tested to 4.9–5.1 in every batch.

If you have ever fake tanned and woken up tight, flaky, or dull, you are not imagining it. Dry skin and irritation in frequent self tanner users is documented in the research.1 It has a specific cause. And it is avoidable.

The real cause

Why does self tanner dry out your skin?

There are three causes. Most people blame the wrong one.

1. Alcohol — the biggest one

Most tanning mists, mousses, and waters are mostly alcohol. Alcohol dries fast, so the product feels light and quick. It also strips the oils your skin uses to hold water.

This is what causes the tight, papery feeling the next morning. Not the tan. The base it came in.

Check any label for alcohol denat. or SD alcohol near the top of the ingredient list. Near the top means there is a lot of it.

2. Your skin's water level changes the result

DHA is the ingredient that makes the tan. It is a sugar. It reacts with amino acids in the dead surface layer of your skin and turns them brown.1 It does not soak in and it is not a dye.

How hydrated your skin is directly affects how that colour develops.2 Dry skin does not just fade faster — it develops unevenly in the first place. So if the formula gives your skin nothing to work with, you get a worse tan and drier skin.

3. The wrong pH

pH is a number that says how acidic something is. Lower means more acidic. Natural skin surface pH averages below 5.3 That mild acidity is called your acid mantle, and it limits water loss, keeps bacteria out, and holds the surface layer of your skin together.1

Here is the part almost nobody knows. DHA does not hold its pH. A fresh solution at pH 4 to 5.5 drifts down toward pH 3 over time as acids form in the bottle.1 So every self tanner brand is making a trade: a lower starting pH keeps the DHA stable for longer on the shelf, but a higher one is kinder to your skin.

You cannot tell from the outside where a brand landed on that trade, or whether anyone checked the finished product afterwards. Published guidance is clear that a product's pH has to be considered so it does not disrupt your skin's own pH balance.1 Not every formula is built that way.

The tan is not what dries you out. The trade-offs made to get it in the bottle are.

Does fake tan dry out your skin too?

Yes — fake tan, self tan, sunless tan, and tanning drops are all the same thing. They all use DHA. So the answer is the same for all of them, and so is the cause.

Spray tans work the same way. The solution is sprayed on instead of rubbed in, but the active is still DHA, and most spray solutions also contain alcohol.

What about a real tan from the sun? That dries your skin too, but for a different reason. UV damages the barrier directly. A self tan only affects the dead surface layer. That is why a self tan is the gentler option — provided the formula is right.

One thing worth being clear about: a self tan does not protect you from the sun. Where a tanning product carries an SPF, that protection is gone once you wash.1 Wear sunscreen either way.


What we do instead

How we built one that does not dry you out

No alcohol at all

There is none in the formula. Nothing stripping your barrier while the colour develops.

pH tested to 4.9–5.1, several times per batch

Not once at the start. Several times through production. If a batch drifts outside 4.9–5.1, it does not ship.

That window sits right on top of your skin's own pH. Given that DHA pulls itself more acidic over time, checking repeatedly is the only way to know where the product you actually receive has landed.

Two actives, so less of each

Erythrulose is a second tanning sugar. It works like DHA but much more slowly, developing over 24 to 72 hours and landing warmer.

This matters more than it sounds. As DHA goes up, the tan shifts toward yellow — and that yellow shift is the likely reason fake tan got its reputation for looking fake.1 Because erythrulose carries part of the colour, we get the same depth with less DHA.

Typical self tanners use 4% to 8% DHA.1 All three of our shades sit in the lower half of that range, and we publish the exact numbers.

A base that gives something back

Grass-fed tallow is the base, not an add-on. Its main fatty acids — oleic, palmitic, and stearic — are the same ones that dominate the oils your own skin makes. That overlap is why skin takes it up instead of leaving it sitting on top.

Alongside it: niacinamide to calm redness, panthenol to soothe, sodium hyaluronate to hold water, and hemisqualane so it spreads evenly.

The result is that the tan develops on skin that is being conditioned at the same time. That is also why our tan fades gradually instead of flaking off in patches.

How to self tan without drying out your skin

This is the routine the research actually supports.1

  • Moisturise the day before, not just the hour before — skin should already be in good condition when you apply
  • Exfoliate gently 24 hours ahead, not the same day
  • Pay attention to elbows, knees, ankles and hands — thicker skin there grabs more colour
  • Use a cream or lotion formula, not an alcohol-based mist
  • Apply in the late evening, wear loose clothing, keep movement minimal
  • Moisturise every day after, not just once

Repeated use of an alcohol-heavy formula can keep the barrier in a compromised state, so switching formula fixes it.
