Why Your Self-Tan Fades Fast and Patchy

You know the pattern. Day one, the color looks incredible. Day two, still good. By day three or four it's gone splotchy — darker in some places, washed out in others, flaking around your ankles and knuckles. You assume you did something wrong.
Usually, you didn't. The fade pattern is built into the formula before it ever touches your skin.
DHA only colors the cells that are about to leave
DHA develops color in the very outermost layer of your skin — the stratum corneum, which is made of dead cells your body is constantly shedding. That's why a self-tan is temporary: as those surface cells slough off, the color goes with them.
Here's the catch. Those cells don't shed evenly. Areas with thicker, drier, faster-turning skin — hands, feet, elbows, knees — let go of their tan first and most abruptly. That's the patchy fade. The ingredient most brands skip
There's a second sunless tanning active called erythrulose. It works through the same family of reaction as DHA, but slower and differently. It develops over 24 to 72 hours instead of a few hours, binds more gradually, and — the part that matters here — fades far more evenly. It softens the hard edges of the DHA fade instead of leaving them to flake.
Used together, DHA and erythrulose cover each other's weaknesses: DHA gives you the faster payoff, erythrulose extends the wear and smooths the way it leaves. The tan looks more natural going on and, more importantly, going off.
So why isn't it in everything? Cost and convenience. Erythrulose is more expensive, and because it develops slowly, it doesn't deliver the instant gratification that makes a customer feel like the product "worked" the first night. DHA alone is cheaper and faster to impress with. The blend is the better tan; it's just the harder sell on a shelf.
How to spot the difference
Read the actives. If the only sunless tanning agent listed is DHA (dihydroxyacetone), you've got a fast-developing, fast-and-patchy-fading formula, no matter what the marketing promises about "long-lasting glow." If you see erythrulose alongside it, the brand has spent money on the fade.
