What is
tallow skincare?

Tallow is one of the oldest skincare ingredients in human history — and one of the most misunderstood. Here's everything you need to know about why it works, and why we built a self tanner around it.

Tallow is rendered
grass-fed beef fat.

Tallow has been used on skin for thousands of years — by cultures around the world, long before the modern skincare industry existed. It fell out of favour in the 20th century when synthetic ingredients became cheaper to produce. But it never stopped working.

At its most basic, tallow is rendered fat from grass-fed cattle. The rendering process purifies it — removing water, proteins, and impurities — leaving behind a stable, nutrient-dense fat that's remarkably compatible with human skin.

Tallow's fatty acid profile is nearly identical to the lipids found in healthy human skin — which is why it absorbs so deeply and works so well.

This biocompatibility is what makes tallow different from most synthetic moisturizers. Rather than sitting on top of the skin, tallow is recognized and absorbed — strengthening the barrier, delivering nutrients, and providing lasting hydration without greasiness.

Why it works.

Human skin is largely made up of saturated and monounsaturated fatty acids — the same fatty acids found in grass-fed tallow. This similarity isn't a coincidence. For most of human history, animal fats were the primary way people nourished and protected their skin.

Modern synthetic moisturizers work by creating a barrier on the surface of the skin — trapping moisture in but not actually feeding the skin. Tallow works differently. Its lipids integrate with your skin's own lipid layer, strengthening the barrier from within and delivering fat-soluble vitamins directly to the cells that need them.

The result is skin that's genuinely hydrated — not just coated. Skin that feels soft because it is soft, not because it has a film of silicone sitting on top of it.

A Vitamin A

Supports cell turnover and skin renewal. Helps fade uneven tone and promotes a smooth, even skin texture.

D Vitamin D

Essential for skin barrier function and immune response. Most people are deficient — topical application supports skin health directly.

E Vitamin E

A powerful antioxidant that protects skin cells from oxidative damage and supports healing and barrier repair.

K Vitamin K

Supports circulation and helps reduce the appearance of dark circles, bruising, and skin discoloration.

Grass-fed vs
conventional tallow.
Property Conventional Tallow Grass-Fed Tallow ✓
Vitamin content Low — grain-fed animals produce fat with minimal fat-soluble vitamins High — pasture-raised animals produce nutrient-dense fat rich in A, D, E and K
Fatty acid profile Higher in omega-6, lower in beneficial CLA Better omega-3 to omega-6 ratio, higher in conjugated linoleic acid (CLA)
Colour and smell Often yellower, stronger odour from diet Paler, cleaner, more neutral — easier to formulate with
Ethical sourcing Feedlot raised, often poor animal welfare standards Pasture-raised, regenerative farming practices
Skin compatibility Less biocompatible due to different fatty acid ratios Highest biocompatibility with human skin lipids
Why tallow in
a self tanner?

Self tanning is hard on skin. DHA — the active ingredient that creates color — works by reacting with the outermost layer of skin cells. This process can leave skin feeling dry, tight, and stripped. Most self tanners compound this with drying alcohols used to speed up drying time.

Tallowtan was designed to solve this problem at the formula level. By building the self tanner on a tallow base, we create a formula where the skin is being actively nourished while the color develops — not dried out.

The tallow also plays a functional role in how the color develops. Because tallow integrates with the skin's lipid layer, the formula sits closer to the skin surface rather than resting on top — which contributes to more even color distribution and a more natural, skin-like finish.

Your skin should look better after you tan — not just darker. That's only possible when the formula starts with the skin, not the color.

Myths about
tallow skincare.
Isn't tallow just animal grease? Won't it clog my pores?
This is the most common misconception. Tallow's fatty acid profile is nearly identical to human sebum — the oil your skin naturally produces. Because of this biocompatibility, it absorbs readily rather than sitting on the surface and clogging pores. Many people who are sensitive to plant oils find tallow works much better for their skin.
Is tallow skincare sustainable or ethical?
Tallowtan uses tallow from grass-fed, pasture-raised cattle. Tallow is a byproduct of the beef industry — using it is a form of whole-animal utilization that reduces waste rather than increasing demand for new resources. Grass-fed farming also supports regenerative agriculture practices that can improve soil health over time.
Will it smell like beef?
No. Properly rendered and purified grass-fed tallow has a very mild, neutral scent — much less than most plant oils. Tallowtan contains zero synthetic fragrance, so what you'll notice is the natural, very faint scent of the formula itself — which most people describe as clean and neutral.
Is tallow safe for sensitive skin?
Tallow is one of the most tolerated skincare ingredients for sensitive skin. Its biocompatibility means it's far less likely to trigger reactions than synthetic emollients or even many plant oils. Tallowtan was specifically formulated for sensitive, reactive, and eczema-prone skin — and tallow is central to why it works for these skin types.
Is tallow new or a trend?
Tallow is one of the oldest skincare ingredients in human history — used for thousands of years before the synthetic skincare industry replaced it with cheaper alternatives in the mid-20th century. The recent interest in tallow skincare isn't a trend — it's a return to an ingredient that was always effective, now backed by a better understanding of skin biology and lipid science.
