Most self tanners were designed with one goal — produce a tan as quickly as possible. Everything else was an afterthought. The result is a category full of products built on drying alcohols, synthetic emulsifiers, and formulas that sit on top of the skin rather than working with it.
You tan, your skin dries out, you moisturize to compensate, and the cycle repeats. The self tanner is never blamed — but it should be.
The self tanning industry optimized for color delivery. We optimized for skin health. Those are very different starting points.
Tallowtan was built from a different premise entirely: what if the self tanner itself nourished your skin? Not just avoided damaging it — but actively improved it. That question led us to grass-fed tallow, and to a formula unlike anything else in the self tanning category.
I didn't set out to start a skincare brand.
After a major career shift, I found myself rebuilding — living somewhere with little sun, dealing with dry, reactive skin, and realizing nothing I tried actually made it look better.
Every self tanner I used either dried my skin out, looked unnatural, or faded unevenly. I spent years trying products that promised natural color but delivered dry, patchy results. The self tanning category was full of compromises I didn't want to make.
So I stopped looking for one that worked and built it myself.
