How to Make Your Tan Last Longer — Smooth Fade, No Patchiness

The secret isn't more product. It's prep, application, and aftercare that keeps your skin barrier calm so color develops evenly and fades clean for up to 7–10 days.

24 hours before · Prep

Exfoliate the right way — not aggressively

Uneven dead skin is the number one reason tans fade patchy. DHA reacts with amino acids in your skin's outer layer — when that layer is rough and uneven, so is the color. Gentle exfoliation creates a smooth, consistent surface for the tanner to work with.

Exfoliate 24 hours before tanning — not the same day. Over-scrubbing sensitizes the barrier and can actually make the fade worse. A light scrub or dry brush is plenty. Focus especially on elbows, knees, ankles, and hands.

Always re-moisturize after exfoliating. Never apply self tanner to freshly stripped skin.
2

Before application · Prep

Moisturize dry zones — the spots that go dark

Dry areas absorb tanning actives faster and darker. This is why elbows, knees, ankles, and knuckles always look overdone compared to the rest of your body. A light layer of moisturizer on these zones before you tan acts as a buffer — slowing the absorption just enough to even things out.

You're not trying to make skin slippery — just take the edge off the driest spots. A pea-sized amount worked into each zone is enough.

```
✓ Do
  • Light layer on elbows, knees, ankles
  • Blend until fully absorbed
  • Let it sink in 5 min before tanning
✗ Don't
  • Apply heavy cream all over before tanning
  • Leave a visible layer on skin
  • Use an oil-heavy balm right before
```
3

Application · Build smart

Apply in thin, even layers — build color later

More product in one application doesn't create a deeper tan — it creates streaks, dark patches, and a faster, patchier fade. One thin, even layer gives you controlled, buildable color that looks natural and lasts longer.

If you want more depth, apply a second layer 24–48 hours after the first one has fully developed. This builds color gradually and gives you much more control over the result.

Start lighter than you think you need. It's easy to build up — impossible to undo an over-application.
4

During development · 6–8 hours

Wear loose clothing while it develops

Tight clothing creates friction during development — the result is uneven color, rub marks, and a fade that looks patchy from day one. For the first 6–8 hours after application, wear loose, breathable fabrics and avoid sitting in tight positions for extended periods.

Dark loose clothing is ideal, even though Tallowtan contains no bronzers or dyes that transfer. It's the friction, not the staining, that matters here.

If you tan before bed, use loose-fitting pyjamas and opt for older sheets during the development window — just as a precaution.
5

Every day after · The most important step

Hydrate daily — this is what actually makes it last

This is the single most impactful thing you can do to extend your tan. Hydrated skin sheds more slowly and evenly — which means color fades gradually instead of lifting in patches.

Start moisturizing the day after your tan develops and don't stop. Apply daily, paying attention to arms, legs, and anywhere that tends to dry out. Your tan will look smoother, last longer, and fade far more evenly.

The Tallowtan formula already includes tallow, hyaluronic acid, and panthenol to support your skin during development — but daily moisturizing after is still the difference between a 5-day and a 10-day glow.
6

Ongoing · Protect your tan

Avoid hot water and harsh soaps

Heat accelerates skin cell turnover — which is exactly what you don't want when you're trying to hold your tan. Long hot showers, chlorine pools, steam rooms, and stripping cleansers all degrade color faster.

Keep showers lukewarm, use a gentle non-stripping body wash, and if you're swimming, moisturize immediately after getting out. These small adjustments add days to your glow.

```
✓ Glow-extending habits
  • Lukewarm showers
  • Gentle, non-stripping body wash
  • Moisturize after every shower
  • Pat dry — don't scrub
✗ Fade accelerators
  • Hot baths or showers
  • Chlorine pools (without rehydrating after)
  • Harsh exfoliating body wash
  • Rubbing dry with a rough towel
```

Every 2–4 days · Maintenance

Refresh instead of restart

Don't wait until your tan fully fades to reapply. Instead, refresh with a light layer every 2–4 days to maintain the glow continuously. This keeps color even, prevents the patchy look that comes from letting a tan fully fade, and means you're never starting from scratch.

A refresh application uses far less product than a full application — just a thin layer over areas that are fading first (usually elbows, hands, and lower legs).

Refreshing is also a good opportunity to re-exfoliate lightly and re-prep dry zones before you apply — especially if it's been more than 4–5 days.

Common questions

FAQ

```
How long should a self tan last?
With proper prep and aftercare, 7–10 days is realistic. The biggest factors are daily moisturizing, avoiding hot water and harsh soaps, and refreshing with a light layer every 3–4 days rather than waiting for it to fully fade.
Why does my tan always fade patchy?
Patchiness almost always comes from dry skin, over-application, or skipping daily moisturizing after development. Exfoliating before application and moisturizing consistently after are the two biggest fixes. Read more about why tans go patchy →
Should I exfoliate before every tan application?
For a full application, yes — light exfoliation 24 hours before makes a significant difference. For a refresh layer (every 2–4 days), a lighter touch is enough. You don't need to do a full exfoliation routine every time you refresh.
Can I swim with a self tan?
Yes, but chlorine and salt water degrade color faster. Moisturize thoroughly after swimming and avoid long soaks. Refreshing with a light layer after swimming sessions helps maintain even color.
Does shaving remove self tan?
Shaving does gently exfoliate the skin surface, which can fade color slightly in shaved areas. Use a sharp razor with a gentle shaving gel or cream, and moisturize after. For maximum wear, shave before — not after — tanning.
